Scrapbusting Tote

 Needing a sewing project for 'in-between sewing projects', I was scratching my head on what to make. I knew I wanted to sew but I didn't want a big commitment, so I raided my fabric scraps and started playing around with them. 

I decided to make a simple tote, using scrap batting to decide what size to make.

I think it turned out good, what do you think? I've put it into my 'gift cupboard' for when I need to find a gift for someone - do you think it'd make a good gift?

I really enjoy sewing this way, it's relaxing and I love seeing the finished product. I think I'll be making more of these in the future!

Scrappy Tula Pink pouch for a gift

Another present sewn, ready to be wrapped and put under the Christmas tree. I hope this will be loved as much as I enjoyed making it. In fact, I'm a little jealous of it, I might have to make myself one too!

Sample piece: Joe's Crazy Patchwork Quilt Coat

 

I just finished making this patchwork coat and I'm slightly in awe at how it turned out.

I used only scrap fabric with some elastic for the edging, does it look ok?

Would you believe that I didn't use a pattern .I made it up as I went along and actually, it was pretty easy!  I was thinking of making myself one and tested my idea out with this for Joe as I'd rather do a small sample then a big one!

Should I film a tutorial on how to make it?  Would you be interested in making a Quilt Coat / Quilt Jacket?

Tell me,  is it a coat or a jacket? 

I used this type of elastic for the edging. I was going to add a zipper but Joe kind of stole it from me when I asked him to try it on for size and doesn't want to give it back, stating that it doesn't need a zip!

What are these?

Something a little different today, can you guess what these (above) are?

I hadn't made them before today, this was my first time sewing them. They looked harder to sew than they were.

They are the best ever scraps stash busting thing ever, one piece of the pattern was super small, perfect for those itty bitty scraps.

Yes, I used knit/stretch fabric, it's a 95/5 blend for extra stretch & recovery. 

The picture looks like I made 4 things but in fact I made 2. 

I made 2 pairs. ...worked it out yet?

My kids were super excited to try them on, they've now asked for more in every colour available. My son says they are more comfortable than shop bought ones. My daughter asked for ones with pompoms.

The pattern is this one. Go grab it and use your scraps. 

Aren't they the cutest things ever!  These were the first test ones, so I just used the first scraps I came too. The heels & toes were optional, I really liked the heels as they turn a 'tube sock' into a 'proper sock't that doesn't slip off the foot easily. The cuffs were also optional, I liked the pop of colour at the top.

They come in heaps of sizes, lengths and options, they even come in tights and adult sizes. 

The pattern was well written with heaps of instructions, making them easy to sew.

Now that I've mastered these, I'm tempted to make more and to also make these ones because I know my son would just love them and he's getting harder to buy & make for as he gets older (he turns 11 soon).

A gorgeous Christmas decoration

I just finished making this gorgeous Christmas decoration, do you like it?

It looks really hard but after you've made a few smaller pieces for it, it all comes together really nicely.

And the big plus factor is that it's a great stash scrap busting project too.

Now that I've made one (for a gift), I think I'll make myself one and leave it hanging up in the loungeroom all year long.

Twirly patchwork dress

I made Laney a patchwork dress as I wanted to use up a bunch of precut fabric.

I had previously spent a day going through my fabric stash and finding all the fabric that I didn't really like anymore or I didn't have enough to make something big with and cut them all up into squares using my cutter. 

...Well, actually, to be totally honest, I handed the fabric to my 9yo son and he put them through the cutter as he loves using it!

The pattern was really easy to use, I loved the bodice as it came together so easily and gave the dress a nice finish.  Pattern is from here and bonus, it comes as adult sizes too.

I love the dress so much that we're planning a second one for Laney and I'm thinking of making myself a patchwork skirt!

Tubbie tub tub

Cuteness alert!
I just finished this little tub. It's super cute and dinky as I made the smallest size. I plan on using it for bits & bobs next to my crafty space.

The pattern is this one... and you should totally get it as it's such a fun and super easy pattern.

The pattern doesn't actually have a handle but I had a small offcut that I finished with binding and was going to use as a bookmark until Delaney saw it and said "No Mumma, look you made a handle" .. and yep, she was totally right, it was meant to be a handle, so it now does!

I also quilted the base as I was on a roll with the quilting!

Fabric scrap patch bag

 

When your 5yo daughter is majorly jealous of her big brother when he uses his sewing machine, you need a fabric project for her to do.

I gave her all my fabric 'trash', the small bits that would normally get thrown in the bin. I also gave her a rectangle of backing fabric (it was a piece that had been in my cupboard for 20yrs!) and I also gave her a glue stick.

She happily glued all the pieces on until they looked 'pretty' and then she sat on my lap and we used the zigzag stitch to sew the pieces on.  We sewed long straight crooked lines until the majority was stitched down. We then switched to pretty coloured threads and used lots of stitches types to jazz it up.

I then trimmed, hemmed and made a quick tote bag and sewed them on as pockets.

I think the bag looks awesome as does all the shop assistants that see it!  Even Grandma was impressed and when she first saw it, she went home and immediately tried it and made herself heaps of blocks!

Go on try it too, it's heaps of fun!

Quick Easy Pouch

I whipped up a small pouch for a birthday gift recently.

I hunted around for some nice fabrics, cut, sewed, trimmed, zippered and French seamed.
I think this small pouch is cute, perfect for popping into a handbag and it's definitely one-of-a-kind!

Stripey Fingerless Gloves

 

I remember as a kid, my Dad used to say "if you hold Marie's hand she'll walk forever with you" … I think the same goes for Laney except now that it's mid winter, those little hands are getting super cold, so the solution was to make her some gloves.

So Laney & I made these. She picked the colours then proceeded to choose the order that they went in. She even sat with me & tried to crochet it herself but she's still a bit too young for the co-ordination side of that.

These fingerless gloves were made from my scrappy stash of 220, I really love this stuff as the colours are so vibrant.

No pattern was used. I measured the length that I wanted it (against her arm), then the circumference of the widest part (at her thumb knuckle) then measured from the top down to the base of her thumb as that's were I'd finish seaming for the thumb hole ..and yes, I crocheted this flat and seamed it together. Very easy and I think I need a pair now!

Afternoon Sewing ebook: Jillian Reversible Tote

 

A ebook called Afternoon Sewing featuring awesome bags that you can whip up in an afternoon ...heck yeah!

This lovely tote was a very easy sew ..and when I say easy, I mean ...super easy!  The hardest thing about making this bag was convincing the kids that this was in fact for me and no, not for them!  They liked the super bright colours but hey, this rainbow is for me!

I was going to use just a plain awesomely bright print but I couldn't choose one then I remembered the jelly roll sitting on the shelf awaiting the perfect project AND it gave me a chance to practice my 'quilt as you go' technique that I originally had used on my first sewn bag (here...).

I think I'll make a couple more and pop aside for gifts. What do you think, is this something that you'd love to receive as a gift?

I'm just waiting on a delivery of some bag hardware, then I plan to make the Night Out Clutch. The mail is a little slow lately as we've had a really, really big storm here and everything is damaged, water logged and many people are still without power (even 4 days after the storm). We were lucky and had no storm damage, even Joe's school was closed the day after because it was flooded. Once life is back to normal, you'll find me next to my sewing machine once again!

Book & Tool Folio

Hot from the ironing board is my latest finish, the Book & Tool Folio.  

I wanted something different for this project but couldn't decide upon a fabric, so I settled for lots of colour, lots of fabric!

I utilised scraps from my stash, even with the finishing binding that was left over from my very first sewn bag (this one).

The pattern was super easy, so easy in fact that I've already started a couple more of these for surprise gifts. The pattern was in this book (find it here in Aus) and I totally recommend it as the folio is already turning out to be super handy for storing all my templates from the pattern book!

The question is ... what shall I sew now and what else could I use this folio for cos I want to keep making them!?
