Sewing beanies

I'm currently in between major knitting projects and I hate being idle, so I decided to start knitting beanies for charity. 

I asked my Mum for her beanie knitting pattern and memorized it after the first time I knit one. I'm using up my stash, so the beanies are all different, wool, acrylic, wool blends.

I then thought that I needed pompoms, I was going to buy some and shuddered at the price, so I decided to make some. They're actually easy to make, let me know if you want me to do a tutorial on making them.

I then decided to sew some beanies as my favourite 'go to' beanie that I wear is actually fabric, not knitted. I used this easy sewing pattern...  and gosh, it's possibly the easiest thing that I have ever sewn. These beanies have been donated to my local public hospital, to the cancer treatment ward, to help keep patients warm as it's super chilly cold here as it's mid-winter.

I'm going to keep knitting & sewing beanies because I can't choose what to knit but I'm narrowing it down ... it's just the cost of yarn that is truly stopping me.

A Knitted Jacket

 

I just finished sewing on the final details of this awesome knitted jacket, it's the Penguono and ohmygosh, it's awesome!

I added pockets and reinforced the shoulder/neck edge as I didn't want it to stretch if it's hung on a chair. If you recall, I also knitted one for Joe a few years ago, check his out here...

I had to finish the back off, I orignally was just going to leave it as the gradient/ombre but after trying the jacket on, I felt it needed to be as 'jazzy' as the rest of the jacket. 
So tell me, what do you think of the sequin eye patch? Do you like it? I absolutely adore it, I think it fits the jacket perfectly. Joe is a little jealous now because his jacket hasn't got a patch on it!   

How did I do that awesome eye? Well, I used this eye patch from here... it was so easy to put on!

I used this gorgeous binding to add strength to the neckline.

This was also the perfect stash buster as you knit 2-3 strands of yarn at a time & I had lots of scraps left over from other projects, a big box of them. Well, now that box of scraps is almost empty as it's all been knitted into this jacket - perfect of Tasmanian weather!

What are these?

Something a little different today, can you guess what these (above) are?

I hadn't made them before today, this was my first time sewing them. They looked harder to sew than they were.

They are the best ever scraps stash busting thing ever, one piece of the pattern was super small, perfect for those itty bitty scraps.

Yes, I used knit/stretch fabric, it's a 95/5 blend for extra stretch & recovery. 

The picture looks like I made 4 things but in fact I made 2. 

I made 2 pairs. ...worked it out yet?

My kids were super excited to try them on, they've now asked for more in every colour available. My son says they are more comfortable than shop bought ones. My daughter asked for ones with pompoms.

The pattern is this one. Go grab it and use your scraps. 

Aren't they the cutest things ever!  These were the first test ones, so I just used the first scraps I came too. The heels & toes were optional, I really liked the heels as they turn a 'tube sock' into a 'proper sock't that doesn't slip off the foot easily. The cuffs were also optional, I liked the pop of colour at the top.

They come in heaps of sizes, lengths and options, they even come in tights and adult sizes. 

The pattern was well written with heaps of instructions, making them easy to sew.

Now that I've mastered these, I'm tempted to make more and to also make these ones because I know my son would just love them and he's getting harder to buy & make for as he gets older (he turns 11 soon).

A gorgeous Christmas decoration

I just finished making this gorgeous Christmas decoration, do you like it?

It looks really hard but after you've made a few smaller pieces for it, it all comes together really nicely.

And the big plus factor is that it's a great stash scrap busting project too.

Now that I've made one (for a gift), I think I'll make myself one and leave it hanging up in the loungeroom all year long.

Twirly patchwork dress

I made Laney a patchwork dress as I wanted to use up a bunch of precut fabric.

I had previously spent a day going through my fabric stash and finding all the fabric that I didn't really like anymore or I didn't have enough to make something big with and cut them all up into squares using my cutter. 

...Well, actually, to be totally honest, I handed the fabric to my 9yo son and he put them through the cutter as he loves using it!

The pattern was really easy to use, I loved the bodice as it came together so easily and gave the dress a nice finish.  Pattern is from here and bonus, it comes as adult sizes too.

I love the dress so much that we're planning a second one for Laney and I'm thinking of making myself a patchwork skirt!

Joe's Jacket: the Pengweeno

I finished knitting this jacket over a month ago but then I got sick, then Joe got sick, then I got sick again... finally, we are all well and I managed to convince Joe to let me to take some photos.

This oversized jacket was the perfect scrap yarn stash buster. I really enjoyed hunting through the cupboard for the all yarn that was hidden in the back that never got used. It's a blend of DK weight yarn held double with Fingering weight yarn so it was a great way to blend colours together.

I really enjoyed knitting this as you knit small blocks at a time, so it went really fast. I'm also totally jealous, so I'll now be knitting myself one!

Fat Quarter Cushions

We decided to have a dvd watching party at home but realised that we didn't have enough seats for everyone. So we decided on cushions and we were about to pop into the car to head to the shops to buy some when I remembered that I had a bunch of cushion inserts in the cupboard.  

It turns out, that the cushion inserts were the perfect size/fit for a fat quarter!  So we dug thru the zipper box and found lots of long zips and then sat down with my super big pile of fat quarters.

  

It was tough choosing fabric for the cushions, I kept saying "no, it's too pretty" ... but then we realised that a cushion was the perfect place to display those "too pretty" pieces of fabric.

   

It turns out most of my "too pretty to use fabric" (was from here) and I'd been keeping them for the perfect project but it had just never came along ...until now!

 

To make the cushions I just sewed the zipper along (what I deemed to be) the bottom edge, then sewed up the the other three sides and inserted the cushion insert. I didn't even use my scissors as I didn't trim the selvedges off the cushions or trim the zipper tape as I just tucked the excess inside.
It was such an easy project and the perfect stash buster. I think we'll make some more next time I see cushion inserts on sale!
